What is Torque?

Torque is the effect of a force to cause an object to rotate around a particular axis.

Torque is measured in "Newton Meters" (N x m). It is measured by how many newtons of force multiplied by the meters it travels.

Some common misconnceptions about Torque include:

-Torque is NOT the same as force
-Torque is the tendency of a force to rotate the body to which it is applied.
-Force is the agency that alters the direction, speed, or shape that a body would exhibit in the absence of any external influence. It is a vector quantity, having both magnitude and direction.
-Torque is NOT the factor that decides how fast a car will go up a hill, that is horsepower
-MORE torque DOES NOT mean BETTER pull
-HIGH torque DOES NOT mean FASTER rotations
-Torque is measured in FOOT POUNDS (a standard world-wide) NOT POUND-FEET
-For best fuel economy, you should drive at the RPM of the engine’s maximum torque
-An engine that has more torque than horsepower is better for towing or pulling
